I’m not the world’s biggest “customer loyalty awards” lover as most usually encourage you to spend money you don’t have with no real benefit to those in need or small discount offerings in return. But when it comes to MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet, and the beneficiary we support through this program, this is something I get very excited about as we get to support a special home very close to my heart, St George’s Home for Girl’s in Wynberg.
St Georges Home for Girl’s in Wynberg
Dating back to 1862, the home strives to provide an environment that closely resembles a loving and caring family home for abused, abandoned, neglected or orphaned children between the ages of 2-18 years old. One of their main focuses is to re-integrate the children with their families as soon as possible.
By providing specialised care, education and teaching life skills to the girls within a secure environment, caregivers empower them with the necessary skills and knowledge to become confident individuals. Equipped with these vital tools the girls are eventually able to leave the home and make a positive contribution to society. The girls are fully integrated into the local community. They attend schools in the surrounding areas, worship at a church of their choice, and are actively involved in extra-mural activities.
Years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the home once a week to teach hip hop dancing to some of the interested girls once they’d returned from school. I can honestly my teaching them benefitted me more than I’m sure it did them. Most were naturally talented dancers and it gave me pure joy to see them improve month after month, start choreographing their own dances and using some routines in their own performances at open days. It’s also wonderful for me to know that many of the girls I once taught have left the home, returned to their own families, and have grown into strong, empowered woman ready to take on the world.
