Wedged between Asia and Europe, in the Caucasus region alongside Azerbaijan and Armenia, you will find the diminutive country of Georgia. From its “beaches” on the Black Sea to the capital of Tbilisi, the country of Georgia (not the US state!) is filled to the brim with sights and sounds that are a must-add to your bucket list!
On your tours of Georgia, traveling its medieval streets and exploring its ruins, you will find that although small in size, the Georgia Republic has more than ruins and mountains to offer!
Where the Caucasus Mountains meet the Black Sea, a beautiful culture is waiting to welcome you with open arms, a delicious “supra” in tow!
Things to do when Travelling in Georgia
As mentioned above, we’re taking you from the capital to the coastline, with some mountain stops in between! For a relatively recluse country, there are many, many places to see in Georgia!
When you go on your Georgia travels, you will be met with a mixture of medieval infrastructure and an evergrowing European culture. Although heavily Russian-influenced, Georgia has in recent years expressed an interest in becoming more westernized!
This lends for an exciting combo of cultures! Let’s see what this interesting and complex country has to offer!
Explore Tbilisi Old Town
Two of our main areas to visit in Georgia country begin on its eastern front, at the capital!
Tbilisi is a beautiful city, blessed with a blend of ancient infrastructure and 21st-century living, exemplifying Georgian culture! You’d be tempted to spend most of your time here, and I wouldn’t blame you if you did!
From its many beautiful churches to the old houses built up onto the hillside, this town remains a testament to the architects of old and their skill! Most of their history can be found in the Old Town, over the crossing at the Kura River.
You can make use of the walking tours that take you through the city, and if your feet are sore and limbs tired, you can soak up the famous Georgian mineral water found at their hot springs!
Traveler’s Note: Try the Georgian cuisine such as a supra (a traditional Georgian feast), or their Khachapuri. But definitely, do miss out on Georgian Wine!
Relax on a Beach at Batumi and Kaprovani
To West Georgia, we now go, and to the Black Sea. One of the lesser-known attractions to western tourists found in Georgia are its black sand and/or large pebble beaches!
Like a separate country altogether, the resort town of Batumi represents the modern, westernized side of Georgia. Traveling here, you’ll find black pebbled beaches with some tropical-esque accommodation. That, and a party vibe that can go long into the night!
In contrast to the pebbled shores of Batumi, Kaprovani is a black sand, summer getaway. It hosts a more health-conscious scene! With its medicinal properties hidden in the sand, Kaprovani, and its nearby beaches, attract families and holidaymakers alike!
That, and the amazing pine forests that begin on the mountainside directly behind it!
Georgia: Traveling the Countryside
Traveling in Georgia can easily be simplified to mountains and monasteries. From my outline above, I hope you see that this isn’t the case! However, I would be amiss to gloss over traveling the Georgian mountains, with their foothills filled with opportunity!
Adventuring in the Caucasus Mountains
Backpackers are beginning to realize that Georgia is their hipster dream. What I mean is, it isn’t popular enough to be mainstream (yet), but still interesting enough to visit!
For many of them, the primary attraction Georgia offers is the opportunity to go hiking into the Caucasus or Kazbegi mountains and hunt for ancient ruins and Instagram shots!
In these mountains, you can find “Medieval Land”, a region of Georgia dotted with ancient watchtowers and castles! You’ll see the Gergeti Trinity Church, where Instagramers and bloggers come to get their highly sought-after “money shot”, whilst admiring Kazbek Peak!
Spend time with these mountains and its ruins. Stay in their small towns, such as Stepantsminda, nearby. Let the clean air and ancient history reinvigorate your passion for inner peace!
A Hidden Gem
Much of Georgia is centered around its natural wonder and spiritual healing. In Borjomi, in the south-center of the country, there is a world-famous mineral spring, thought to be healing for the body and soul. In the west, there are the parties hosted in Batumi!
As mentioned above, it is yet to become popular enough to be flooded with tourists, and still holds that allure of being relatively undiscovered. For me, this makes it an ideal spot to look further into! History is my thing, and the outdoors speak to me.
Touring Georgia is safe, it can be budget-friendly if need be, and it has enough of a unique vibe to give it a shot!
So, what are you waiting for?
Seriously, what? If you’ve come this far, reading about the Republic of Georgia, then something has piqued your interest! It’s worth asking yourself what it may have been.
If it was the stories of monasteries on hilltops or Old Town Tbilisi on the river, then give Georgia the opportunity to impress you. I think there’s a good chance it just might!
