Historic Alora and its modern amenities
With more airlines offering competitively cheaper flights to most airports in Spain, holidays to the Mediterranean are more affordable than ever. Southern Spain in particular, is home to an abundance of pretty towns and villages that are just waiting to be discovered.
Situated on the sun-soaked Costa del Sol, the Malaga village of Alora is an inviting travel destination for visitors looking for the warm Mediterranean climate. The picturesque village comes with traditional Spanish whitewashed homes that make perfect photo backdrops for Instagram selfies.
Travellers will find an idyllic setting with mountains to one side and the Mediterranean Sea to the other. For visitors unable to reach the beach and the sea, many of the hotels and resorts that are dotted around Alora come with excellent sized swimming pools.
With Malaga weather as reliable as it is, you’ll appreciate a private pool with the opportunity to cool off in July & August and to bathe in nearly never-ending sunlight.
Alora is also filled with tourist attractions. Once you have had your feel of the nearest beach, you can explore the village’s own museum to see historic artefacts discovered around the surrounding areas. Alora’s history dates back hundreds of years and this museum contains findings from centuries ago.
It may be small, but this very interesting museum highlights the history of the town and local vicinity. Housed in a great location on the historic Plaza Baja de la Despedia within the 300 year old parochial church, its pleasant oldy-worldy atmosphere makes you feel like you have just stepped back in time.
Families looking for more fun outdoor activities and sports, will find numerous exciting cycling trails, horse riding, and quad bikes available to hire. The mountains, forests, and the natural setting of Malaga Province, are a pretty playground for anyone looking for a great outdoor adventure.
El chorro
In Alora’s neighbourhood, you don’t have to travel too far for unique and natural treats. With its delicate mix of shades including aqua, cyan and teal, El Chorro lake happens to be one of the most stunning natural lakes around these parts. This picturesque and tranquil location is also perfect for families that enjoy picnics together near serene woodlands.
There are actually three sections to this lake which makes a walk around the perimeter a good challenging trek for the more adventurous types. There is even the opportunity to tour the lakes on quad bike. If you want to entertain the kids for hours, be sure to take an inflatable kayak or dinghy with you or hire a pedalo available from the far side car parks.
The Guadalhorce River runs through the gorge at El Chorro and is a haven for wildlife. This particular spot is ideal area to observe all manner of birds, including eagles and kestrels. This popular gorge is 400 meters deep and nearly 4 kilometres long.
Caminito del Rey
Another popular thing to do in Alora is to walk the “Caminito del Rey” (The Kings path). This is an incredibly thrilling adventure trail made on a very tall and steep rock wall. With no opportunity of giving in to fear of heights, you will almost meet the low clouds as you walk on a height of over 100 metres.
Another surprise is right above you, with stunning vultures and falcons circling just overhead, you’ll ‘enjoy nature’s delights’ throughout most of your experience.
Local top notch restaurants
With Alora’s restaurants and good choice of nightlife all being on the doorstep, means that you don’t have to go far to find a great spot when the sun goes down. There is a wonderful selection of dining places for all tastes and diets. If you don’t mind paying a little more, located at Calle Padilla 1, is Casa Abilo.
Being vegetarian friendly, and with gluten free options, the small yet ample menu offers popular dishes with a twist. Well known for its exquisite fish and meat dishes, all in original, delicious home-made sauces, the restaurant also offers interesting and memorable tapas.
Getting to Alora
From Malaga airport there are a number of transport options including the frequent bus route. Due to the well maintained motorway or autovia, Malaga airport transfers to Alora are now only a short 40 minute journey. Also, local train services link Alora with other towns around Malaga Province, including Fuengirola and Torremolinos.
Due to its location, Alora is a great home base for travellers looking to see other areas of the Costa del Sol.
