Tourists and locals alike flock to see the 12 metre high statue of the Big Buddha. The temple is known as Wat Phra Yai once you walk up the steps and make your way to the gigantic statue, you look all around you to see boats passing by on the ocean. The statue is one of the first things you’ll see when flying onto the island.
The Big Buddha can be located near the airport and reached by a causeway that goes out over the waters.

heh heh remember going to visit it back in ’97, freshly arrived from SA. found myself in a monk’s kuti checking out his living arrangements – a young monk had invited me to take a look around, guess he was practicing his english. nothing dodgy happened, but back then I had no idea that monks weren’t completely supposed to be showing farang women their living quarters…
