On our trip from Cape Town to Pretoria aboard the world’s most luxurious train- The Rovos Rail, we travelled through the Karoo. The Karoo is the semi-desert region of South Africa and we were able to experience it’s barren beauty from sunrise to sunset from the train. Here’s a glimpse of our journey through the Karoo…
Sunrise in chilly Deelfontein.
Watching the sunrise from the Observation Car before anyone else on the train is awake.
Breakfast is about to served in the dining car.
Vaughan documenting his journey aboard the train.
We passed windmills in the middle of nowhere,
construction workers attending to the railways
and unexpected patches of green.
We saw tiny, deserted train stations
and people waving at us as we passed by.
Vaughan tried on the goggles given to us for flying bugs
and eyed the passing windmills and trees.
At every hour of the day the dry landscape changed.
The last of the day’s sun shining into the lounge.
Just outside of Kimberly, we are relaxed in the lounge car
and watch hundreds of flamingos wading in the Kamfer dam.
From our suite, I watched the sun leave the last of its warm rays on the dry land…
and the sun sunk ever lower over passing rivines.
There were many houses made of tin built right beside the railway
where a young boy waved and became silhouetted against the sunset.
There is no better place to watch a Karoo sunset than from the Rovos Rail.

What a wonderful photographic record of your trip – the Karoo is really beautiful!
Thanks Lynne- The Karoo really is one of the most bare and beautiful places in the world!
Wow, what a special experience. I love the romance of train travel and I love the Karoo. What a perfect combination!
Totally…it really is the most romantic rail and train trip 🙂
These are awesome photos Lauren, especially of the sunset, and interior of the train – really does look like luxury! How long were on you on there for?
Thanks Lily, these photos were shot by both my husband Vaughan and I. The trip from Cape Town to Pretoria was two and half days. Just enough time to take it all in and enjoy the passing views and gourmet meals served four times a day 😉
