Whilst on a game drive in the Kruger National Park, we were able to witness two lionesses stalking and ambushing a group of warthog. The day was coming to an end, the last rays of sunlight set the bush aglow and our game ranger, Jan, continued to move the vehicle to move alongside the action as it unfolded…

Lions stalking warthog
Spotted two lionesses relaxing beside the road.

Lions stalking warthog
The back lioness wakes up and stares in the same direction as her friend/family member.

Lions stalking warthog
She scratches her chin.

Lions stalking warthog
Swishes her tail in contentment.

Lions stalking warthog
And licks her paws.

Lions stalking warthog
We cannot see what they see, but she licks her lips at the thought.

Lions stalking warthog
We seem to have been spotted, but they pay no notice to us.

Lions stalking warthog
There’s a yawn,

Lions stalking warthog
a stretch

Lions stalking warthog
and a bit of a team talk

Lions stalking warthog
before they set off.

Lions stalking warthog
They pass sneakily behind bushes.

Lions stalking warthog
Together at first

Lions stalking warthog
And then we lay eyes on their prize.

Lions stalking warthog
The warthogs cross the road quickly.

Lions stalking warthog
And run for some kind of cover, probably aware they are being watched.

Lions stalking warthog
Whilst one lioness crosses the road behind our vehicle, this lioness waits patiently on this side of the road.

Lions stalking warthog
Together they prepare to ambush the warthogs from both sides.

Lions stalking warthog
But she waits patiently for the first sight of her partner in the hunt.

Lions stalking warthog
Keen on a meal she looks eagerly ahead in their direction.

Lions stalking warthog
Eyes on the prize, she crosses the road, sees the warthog, but decides to wait to go back and wait for her partner.

Lions stalking warthog
We’re all wondering what could be taking the other lionness so long.

Lions stalking warthog
She returns to wait it out.

Lions stalking warthog
Meanwhile the warthog probably have no idea what’s in store.

Lions stalking warthog
She keeps a look out.

Lions stalking warthog
Finally she’s on the move again.

Lions stalking warthog
She keeps her eye on them and decides the wait is over.

Lions stalking warthog
It’s time.

Lions stalking warthog
Game Ranger Jan radios the action to other drivers.

Lions stalking warthog
Over she goes.

Lions stalking warthog
She watches…

Lions stalking warthog
And slowly stalks behind the bushes.

Lions stalking warthog
The warthogs have not noticed her approaching

Lions stalking warthog
Now they have and they’re off…

Lions stalking warthog
A third new lioness approaches from the other side, knowing dinner is perhaps on the way.

Lions stalking warthog
and she too crosses the road amidst all the onlookers.

Lions stalking warthog
And with that they disappear on the chase.

Lions stalking warthog
All that’s left in sight is a hornbill on a branch, but I’m guessing the lionesses ate well that night.

This game drive experience was sponsored by Jock Safari lodge, but all views expressed are my own.

AWESOME write up again. I have virtually the same set of photos of that amazing sighting. That was indeed one of the most exhilarating of times, my wife managed to video most of it too!!!
