Jade Hotel, Taipei

Landing in Taiwan after dark, and being delayed thanks to some crafty Bangkok Airport manoeuvres or “Runway Maintenance” as they called it, was always going to be a tough pill to swallow. Especially after “Resort Thailand” (as I consider the country in hindsight) was a traveller’s breeze. We lived on the edge however and decided against booking accommodation prior to landing in the country. Our mutinous defiance turned into sobs when we realised exactly how far up poo creek we were.

Doing the basics like logging into a WiFi connection and booking through Agoda took a murderous 1.5hrs but we finally found Jade Hotel, which seemed to be near central Taipei, and then realised we had to navigate a bus journey there. Luckily our first encounters with Taiwanese all proved awesome. They were friendly and helped our dejected faces out. Eventually we found Jade Hotel and it was like an oasis. A small and fairly cramped oasis but clean! This made Lauren very happy. The hotel is near busy markety type streets and the one night we spent there was great. The staff were ultra-friendly – a young guy and girl that really tried to help us out with directions and routes etc.

The “Breakfast” included option actually turned out to be a $49 NTD voucher for a small MacDonald’s breakfast. Accommodation in Taiwan, as we have since learnt, is much more expensive than Thailand. So I have to rate them on a completely different scale. I give them a 7 though; clean rooms and comfy beds were exactly what we needed.

Best thing – Impeccably clean.

Worst thing – A little bit difficult to find for a foreigner – it’s in an alley of sorts which involved some scampering around to find.

Professional photographs (and I can verify that they’re pretty similar to reality) for the Hotel can be found on Agoda or TripAdvisor – unfortunately we didn’t end up getting any except this gem of Lauren stoked to have found it and checked in.
