1. Local Travel
After a difficult couple of months under strict lockdown, we are looking forward to warmer weather and a breakaway. It is a great option to plan your holiday within the borders of South Africa, as the local tourist industry really needs the support. Here is how you can plan for your local holiday:
What to do before you travel
First, you must consider if the area you are travelling to are experiencing surges in virus cases. It is best to avoid areas that are marked as hotspots.
It is also wise to contact any accommodation, restaurants or parks to find out what their protocols are before you travel. This will help you to better plan your vacation. Also, keep in mind that restrictions can change rapidly, so it is best to contact establishments again just before you arrive.
Tip: To avoid stops on the journey, you can prepare food and water to take on the trip. If you choose to get a meal on the road, go for restaurants that offer drive-thru options.
What to do when you travel
You have to keep your mask with you at all times. If you are using public transport, your mask should fit on your face, covering both your nose and your mouth.
You should wash or sanitize your hands often while travelling. This is very important after using the bathroom, before eating, and after coughing or blowing your nose. Also, try to avoid contact with frequently touched surfaces such as handrails and kiosks.
If you are visiting restaurants, garages or shops on the way, you must maintain a distance of at least 2 meters between you and others.
Should you get tested?
It is not necessary to get tested when you are travelling inside the borders of South Africa. However, some establishments may require this. It is best to find out from the accommodation, park or business you are planning to visit what their specific requirements are before you travel.
2. International Travel
When you’re planning to travel internationally, there are several precautions to be aware of. Get the facts about your travel options and learn how to protect yourself throughout your journey:
What to do before you travel
Before you apply for a visa or book a ticket, contact the consulate and the airline to confirm which regulations they have in place.
You should also ensure that you have the necessary essentials packed before you leave for the airport. This includes a mask and hand sanitizer. It is also wise to pack some wet wipes or tissues to wipe your hands clean with sanitizer when you are unable to wash your hands.
What to do when you travel
During your journey via plane, bus or train, you should wear your mask at all times. If you are concerned that the mask will get dirty on the road, pack an extra mask, but never go without one.
Try to avoid touching any surfaces and if you do, wash or sanitize your hands directly after.
During your journey, you should also practice social distancing where possible. This may require you to avoid crowding in waiting areas, restaurants and bathrooms.
Tip: Most airlines, and bus and train services now allow you to show a digital ticket. This makes it easier to avoid any unnecessary paperwork. If you can, you should also check-in online to avoid more contact.
Should you get tested?
Yes, most airports and airline require a negative COVID-19 test result before you board a plane. To get a test, you must visit your doctor for a referral. You then need to stipulate that the test is for international travel. Your doctor may conduct the test at the surgery or give you a referral letter to visit your nearest testing centre. Usually, the test should not be older than three days at the time of your departure.
Arriving at your destination, you will be screened again at the airport. Those with symptoms will be required to conduct another COVID-19 test. Should any traveller test positive, he or she will need to enter a quarantine facility at their own cost.
Remember: Even the most exciting plans need to be set aside when you are feeling ill or experiencing any symptoms. If you are not feeling well before your planned travel, always choose to stay home except to get medical care.
Plan carefully before you travel
Summer is on our doorstep, and nobody will blame you if a trip to your favourite destination is tempting you. However, even if you are ready to take the trip, there are a few things to consider before you leave your home. Always keep in mind that you are not only protecting yourself but also those around you, so wear your mask, sanitize often and get tested if you are planning to cross the borders.
