Now that summer is showing its beautiful face in Cape Town, is there a better way to spend the evening than watching a movie outdoors? Galileo Open Air Cinema has come to Cape Town and will be featuring various films between November and April 2014. Enjoy a romantic date or a movie night with friends and family at any of the following venues: Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville (Tuesday), Kirstenbosch in Newlands (Wednesday) and the V&A Waterfront in town (Thursday).
You’re welcome to dress up for the occasion, there will be a resident photographer at each venue and the Galileo’s team of movie buffs will be handing out complimentary tickets to the best dressed person – think burlesque for Moulin Rouge, Darth Vadar, Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi for Star Wars, kitsch but cool for Zoolander and of course, there’s nothing like a man in uniform for Top Gun – whatever the movie, make an occasion of it, from start to finish.
I have one pair of tickets to giveaway to ‘The Hangover’ at Hillcrest Quarry, Durbanville on the 19 November. So if you’re in Cape Town, this is how you can enter…
Hillcrest Quarry, Durbanville.

Arrive early to reserve your spot, blankets and backrest are available for hire and don’t forget to bring some extra cash. Delicious, mouth-watering food, wine and bar drinks will be on sale throughout the show at Hillcrest Quarry and local artisanal food vendors will have a large variety of delectable specialties on offer to enjoy, picnic-style, at Kirstenbosch and the V&A. Alternatively, take advantage of the cosmopolitan vibe at the Waterfront and visit one of the many food outlets before or after the show.

I think the Galileo Cimena is a brilliant idea. Brings back the old ‘Drive-in’ feeling, but it is set up in a way that families can enjoy the movie experience and and also enjoy spending time together. It is a great alternative to going to a movie house to see a movie when you can experience it under the stars. Cape Town always has something different to offer and I would absolutely LOVE to experience that first hand!
Vaughan McShane says
That’s pretty much spot on – it does bring back that old “Drive-in” and families come with both young and old! Truly magical. Goodluck for Monday!

I would love to go there with all my mates and sprawl ourselves out on the lawns with a good glass of wine and treats from the food stalls and enjoy the awesome summer weather CPT has to offer while watching the old classic and feeling completely blissful in my existence 🙂

This awakens memories of a time long long ago. When Drive-ins were an institution and packing blankets, pillows and the kitchen zink for the evening was fun.
Checking around to see which of your friends were there – who was smooching and who was smoking on the sly.
I would love to go – even if I dont win the tickets – I can not stay away. This is part of our culture.
Thank you for posting the link and making me aware of it.

What better place than our beautiful Cape Town to do this? Two of my favorites in one, the outdoors and awesome movies! I’d much rather go out with a couple of friends and enjoy and picnic while watching a movie, than sitting in a boring indoor cinema! Great way of bringing family and friends together. : )
Vaughan says
You’ve hit the nail on the head Nina – it’s a great way of combine the bests CPT has to offer. Hope you manage to get to one before April and thank you for entering 🙂

For years my husband, Jonny, has had a dream of showing a movie outdoors, in a beautiful setting. Well, we haven’t found the perfect venue…yet! But Galileo has. I would very much like to make his dream come true in a wonderful romantic setting, so close to our 44 month wedding anniversary on Thursday. Here’s to another new experience…together…in Cape Town!!!!
