About 30 minutes outside of Cape Town, you’ll find the quaint town of Stellenbosch with its giant oaks. While wine is the main pull to this region, I love traipsing around the town, stopping off at coffee shops, perusing in art galleries and observing how a young student culture merges with the historical Dutch heritage. It is said to to be one of the second oldest settlements in the province, after Cape Town and you’ll notice that churches and buildings date back to the 1800’s, even earlier.
Students party at night and during the day, it almost feels like Europe with its plazas, galleries and sidewalk cafes. If nothing else, take a walk around and enjoy an ice-cream cone, rent a bicycle to cycle around town or visit a wine estate.
