One of the most exciting and rewarding things that you can do as a couple is to travel. Getting to see new places and experience new things with someone you love is fantastic, but that doesn’t mean that it’s always easy. As with all things in life, it comes with a certain amount of learning along the way – here are six things we wish we’d known before traveling as a couple.
You each have strengths and weaknesses
Chances are you are quite different people, and as such, you’ll have your own set of strengths and weaknesses. For example, some people are great at finding good deals on flights, while others can pick up a language really well and communicate with locals. The sooner you find out what your strengths are, the sooner you can put them to use on your travels.
Traveling as a couple pushes you out of your comfort zone
When you travel solo, you tend to only do the things that you want to do. However, when you’re a couple you may end up having to see or do things that you wouldn’t usually. Often this will open your eyes to something your partner enjoys and you might find yourself having a good time too! Be prepared to compromise and do things you both want to do – instead of just doing one or the other.
Budget or luxury, you can have an amazing time
A luxury trip, for most people, is not an everyday occurrence, although there are ways to enjoy luxury on a budget. That being said, sometimes the budget trips are the ones you enjoy the most, as long as you are open to adventure. When you are with the right person, that means so much more than the price of your hotel or the size of your pool.
If you can survive travel, you can survive anything
They say you should live with someone before you marry them, but traveling is just as important! You see them at their most stressed, first thing in the morning, after a bad night’s sleep, and when everything is going wrong. If you can navigate delayed airplanes, bed bugs and getting lost with your partner without falling out, you’ll probably be okay!
It’s okay to spend time apart
Traveling can be pretty stressful and can put a strain on even the strongest of relationships. Everyone needs some alone time and it’s important to spend a little time apart to recharge. This could just be an hour where you both do your own thing or a full day where you enjoy something that the other person might not have enjoyed doing. When you come back together you’ll be even more grateful for your relationship.
There’s no time like the present!
Between 2016 – 2017, over 10 million Aussies travelled abroad, but we still don’t think that’s enough! We believe everyone should experience the wonder of travel, and if they can do it with a partner too, that’s even better! Once you have experienced traveling the world together, you will wish you had started sooner, and you won’t ever want to stop.
We love traveling together and we are so lucky to have made it our job! If you are on the fence about traveling with your partner, give it a go – we’re sure you will have an amazing time.
